R410A air conditioning in 2026: repair, recharge or replace?

By the Aircadia team

If your air conditioning runs on R410A, don’t panic: it remains authorised, usable and repairable in 2026. What changes is that this refrigerant is at end of life — its production is cut by the F-Gas regulation, so recharging becomes rare and expensive. As long as your unit doesn’t leak, keep it. On a major leak or serious breakdown, replacing it with an R32 (or R290) model often becomes the most economical choice.

How do I know if my AC runs on R410A?

The information is on the outdoor unit’s rating plate (marked “R410A”). As a rule, air conditioners installed before 2018-2019 run on R410A; more recent ones are mostly on R32. When in doubt, a professional identifies it immediately.

What the regulation changes (and doesn’t)

The European F-Gas regulation aims to reduce high-climate-impact refrigerants. R410A, with a GWP of around 2,088, is the main target.

What doesn’t change: you’re entitled to keep and service your R410A unit.

What changes: new R410A is becoming scarce. As a result, the recharge price rises year after year, and this trend will intensify.

Repair, recharge or replace: how to decide

Three concrete situations:

  • Small breakdown, no leak (filter, electronics, fan) → repair, your unit has good years ahead.
  • Refrigerant leak → first get the leak search + repair + recharge quoted. On a recent unit, it’s worth it; on an old one, compare with a replacement.
  • Old unit (10 years+) with a major breakdown or leakreplacing it with an R32 model is often more worthwhile: better performance, lower bill, and a refrigerant still current.

The Aircadia tip: don’t rush to replace a working R410A unit — it’s useless and costly. The right time is a major leak or a heavy breakdown. Then switching to R32 becomes a real gain.

And if I replace: R32 or R290?

In 2026, R32 is the default choice: available, efficient and grant-eligible. R290 (propane), with near-zero climate impact, is the most sustainable option but still uncommon. To choose well for your home, see our guide Which air conditioning to choose in 2026.

FAQ

Will my R410A AC break down because of the law?

No. The regulation doesn’t make your unit faulty. It limits new refrigerant production, which only raises the cost of future recharges.

How much does an R410A recharge cost in 2026?

The price varies by quantity and region, but rises steadily due to scarcity. That’s precisely what tips the balance towards replacement on old units that leak.

Can an R410A unit be converted to R32?

No, you don’t “convert” a unit: the circuits and components are designed for a specific refrigerant. Switching to R32 means new equipment.

In short

An R410A AC in 2026: keep it while it runs well, repair small breakdowns, and replace with R32 at the time of a major leak or serious breakdown. An honest diagnosis avoids needless spending.
